May 31 (A Glorious Joyride)

As you might guess from the title, today was excellent. The roads were all relatively flat, and conditions were great. My foot felt a little better, but then my knees started aching. Ce la vie, no?

I arrived at Paradise Campground in the late evening and, to my chagrin, didn't have enough cash to afford a campsite. The ranger took pity on me though, and gave me a "senior" discount, and allowed me to stay for half price. He even gave me a free bundle of wood! (Which I proceeded to then fail to light on fire repeatedly ... I never did make it through Boy Scouts)
Apparently a few riders here are doing a supported tour for charity. Had I seen them it would have been really cool to chat. There's also a bunch of people at the camp who brought their bikes with them by car. I wonder if they are all here for the mountain as well?

Speaking of the mountain, I've got a hellish ride tomorrow, looks like a 40 km long 4000 foot climb up a mountain. Wish me luck!

  1. The key to building a fire—as I learned in the Boy Scouts—is for someone's dad to pull a butane torch and bic lighter out of the trunk of his car. Of course, I'm not suggesting you carry either of these items.

Outside the Boy Scouts, I learned that with a safety candle and pack of Coleman Waterproof Matches (available at many campgrounds and Wal-mart), you can light damn near anything fire. Just dribble some of that wax on the wood and paper and light that baby up. (One safety candle is good for several dozen fires.)
